Stroll through the rose garden or enjoy the expansive space for sports and picnicking..
Soccer fields, baseball fields and basketball courts mix with plenty of open lawn for volleyball, relaxing barbecues and picnic tables. The famous rose gardens are required viewing, as are the ducks in the lovely lake. The jogging trail running the perimeter of the park is a big attraction; runners share it with power walkers, a plenitude of pooches and an occasional tricycle. The swimming pool is open to the public with plenty of lifeguards to handle the summer crowds. Or avoid the sun altogether by heading inside the McKinley Park public library for a peaceful afternoon between the stacks.
When to Go
Early morning and late evening are the best--unless of course you're talking about mid-August in Sacramento, when those are the only times it's crowded. The rest of the amenities are so plentiful that most any time is good.
East Sac Favorite.
It's a tossup as to which park our family likes more - McKinley or Land Park. If it is a sunny Spring weekend day in East Sacramento, pay a visit to McKinley Park.
The rose garden has an incredible variety of roses and is well cared for by volunteers.
A favorite activity here is to jog, walk, or rollerskate around the park. If you like Bungalow or Tudor architecture, pay attention to the variety of homes which surround the park.
If you have young children - pay a visit to the Duck Pond. If you bring bread crumbs you can pretend you are the pied piper of ducks.
There is a pool and a fine old brick library to hide in during the hot summer months. If you are a book addict - hit the book sale in the Spring.
