Pioneer days come alive in downtown Sacramento at the West's oldest restored fort..
The Scene
Built by Swiss immigrant John Sutter more than 150 years ago, this fort was a refuge for weary travelers including the fated Donner Party survivors, who were trapped by winter snows in the Sierra Nevada. Sutter soon became known for his hospitality, which immigrants could take advantage of when they arrived in California in the 1840s.
The Experience
Demonstrations depicting life in the 1840s and self-guided audio tours are offered year-round. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, a daily "living history experience" is available. Take a piece of history home when you visit the traders and crafts fairs, gift shop and book store.
