The Scene
Not particularly fancy, Cafe Morocco offers little in the way of elegance. Instead, Persian rugs, scattered plants and trinkets and bobbles from foreign lands give it a broken in, homey feel. Not too many people are aware of this hidden treasure, although it's been around for more than 10 years and has received kudos from every publication in town.
The Food
Mediterranean staples like humus, dolma, falafel and kabobs, mixed in with more obscure dishes like the Egyptian mujadara (chicken, rice and lentils cooked with spices and vegetables) and Moroccan tagine (lamb or chicken with vegetables and Moroccan spices).
What to Order
The Casablanca kabob served with your choice of meat and a Moroccan version of BBQ sauce. Or, if you go for lunch, try the shawarma (it's like a Mediterranean burrito) or the lamb humus.
What to Skip
The harira soup is bland. Opt for the Greek salad instead. (9/00)
The Details on Cafe Morocco
Belly Up:
This is one of the only restaurants in town to see belly dancing. Every Friday and Saturday night, the captivating dancers wiggle their ways across the room.
Wine and Dine:
You'd be remiss not to try the Sidi Brahim. Imported from Morocco, it tastes like a Merlot. Also, from Lebanon, the Kasara is a great full-bodied red wine that goes well with almost everything on the menu. For just over $20 a bottle it's a bargain.
