The perfect place to explore the roots of rock..
The Skinny
Perhaps the area's closest thing to an old-time roadhouse, Palms Playhouse remains a favorite spot for fans and musicians alike. The Palms may seem like little more than an old barn at first glance, but its rustic, intimate charm and excellent sound have inspired no less than Jimmie Dale Gilmore to profess a deep love for the venue. Friendly staffers ensure a comfortable, low-key experience, but a top-notch list of acts, such as Gilmore, Guy Clark, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Robert Earl Keen, NRBQ, Tish Hinojosa and Joe Louis Walker, among others, is its real claim to fame. Even the arrangement of old, wooden folding chairs, set in close concentric semicircles around the stage, lends itself to the hootenany spirit. The bar serves beer and wine, as well as pretzels by the disposable cupful. A rare and wonderful venue.
The Crowd
A mostly middle-aged crowd. However, a sprinkling of young people can be found searching for the roots of popular music.
It is all about the music. The Palms is a small concert hall (not a bar), which spent 27 years in an old barn in Davis, has moved to the 125 year old opera house in Winters. But don't dispair! Owner Dave Fleming is still booking the eclectic mix of folk, blues, americana, bluegrass, and rock. The new place has a few more seats (not the old folding wood chairs!) better restrooms and the same friendly staff. Not the same ambiance but afterall, it really is all about the music. And The Palms is the place to go.
