oops! – So disappointed - Food was tasteless, very dry and cold.
Used to be soooo good. What happened?? Won't go back!
3 strikes, you're out! – There are so many things to complain about, I don't know where to start. We've given this place three tries in the span of one year, each time thinking maybe we just had a random bad experience and gave them another try. Well, sorry Sudwerk Riverside, three strikes and you're out!
First, they really need to update their website. The hours for Sunday say they open at 10. But when we got there at 10:30, we discovered they really didn't open until 11 a.m. When we told the hostess about this, she just sighed and said there was nothing she could do about that. Um, how about tell your manager?! You'd think they'd want the times right since while we waited for them to open, we saw at least half a dozen people drive up and drive away once they saw it wasn't open yet.
It was a lovely Sunday morning, a little breezy though, so we were somewhat hesitant on sitting outside but gave it a try. As soon as we walked out onto their deck, one of the umbrellas went flying up onto the roof! The waiters didn't seem so concerned at the time, until, when we sat down, the umbrella came crashing down and nearly pelted my husband in the head! Needless to say, we moved inside. I asked them for a sling for the baby car seat carrier we had with us, but our waiter had no idea what I was talking about. All the restaurants we've been to have slings or at least chairs big enough to hold the baby carrier, but this place had neither. So my child was on the floor; did not make for an easy time when it came to feeding her a bottle. Their Sunday brunch menu looks really impressive, we were really excited for the mimosa or champagne that came with our meal. We decided to get the champagne while the other couple with us got their mimosas, bad choice, they were so watered down!
Onto the food, which took half an hour to get to us! We were surprised because they were not at all busy. Every one's food was cold! My husband and I ordered the eggs Benedict's. The hollandaise sauce was tasty. They serve it on foccacia bread which was heavily seasoned with herbs; didn't mix too well with the sauce. It was also served with country potatoes, which to everyone at our table, reminded us of the frozen stuff you'd make at home. Plus they were so cold it was as if they forgot to cook them and just pulled them out of their freezer!
Service was slow. Our waiter was a nice guy, just not attentive at all. To get a refill on a drink, we had to go to the bar ourselves.
This place is definitely not baby friendly. When I needed to change my daughter's diaper, I went into the restroom assuming there would be a changing table, but no. At least they had a large enough counter so I could change her on that.
On to desert, we were hoping this would save our experience, but alas, it only added to the negatives. We ordered creme brulee, my favorite, I love the creamy cool texture with the warm caramelized sugar on top. This was not that. It was more like old flan with burnt sugar and dusted with nutmeg powder and runny whipped cream. That put the nail in the coffin for us.
I must point out that we love the Sudwerk in Davis! I guess when we want a good Sudwerk's beer with a delightful meal, we'll have to make the hour long trek down there, because we will never give the Folsom one another try, ever!
The Customer is NEVER Right – The hostess working there on Sunday morning was such a beeeeeeyaaatch to me that I almost wrestled her to the ground and pounded her face in. She needs a serious lesson in customer service. I will never again step foot in this restaurant or recommend it to anybody that I know.
We had to wait 30 minutes past our supposed reservation time, were seated at a tiny and dirty table, and when I told her we moved outside (which is an option she gave us) was challenged by a bitchy little attitude. She told me that keeping the tables clean was not her job. Wow!!!! I just couldn't believe it. Not once did she say "Oh, I'm sorry about that", or anything that any other normal restaurant employee would say. She just looked at me like I was crazy for even telling her. Then she looked at the other hostess like I was there attacking her when all I was trying to do was tell her that we were now sitting outside. I told her she wouldn't last at this job another month with customer service skills like that. Then she said "Why are you attacking me?". I'm not, I'm here to have Sunday Brunch you crazy little girl!!!!!
Don't even bother with this place. It's dirty, the service stinks and the food isn't even worth the hassle.
Bad customer service!! – My lovely boyfriend decided to take me out to a nice romantic dinner for my birthday to the Cliff House. As we pulled up there were customers standing outside that just finished their dinner, and inside there were still customers eating. Closing time was in 30 min. So they were open right? As we walked up to the front counter there were two ladies standing there, and one rolled her eyes as she looked at the clock and huffed and puffed with a bad attitude. She didnt know I saw her do that. Then she proceeded to ask if we wanted to eat!..And said 'well u know we are closing in 30minutes' and she proceeded to make other excuses of why we should leave. At that point I didnt feel safe eating there knowing this nasty old woman would be serving our food. So we just left. We will never go there again. The customer service skills are well below par!
Avoid altogether – We took our parents here to Sunday brunch for their 63rd Anniversary. The restaurant and parking area was packed so we thought that was a good sign but apparently there are alot of people who have very bad taste. The food is awful. The presentation is not very good either. AND NOT CHEAP. We were seated next to window to look out onto the water which was the only good thing except it was in the bar area. We requested outdoor seating but they could not accommodate 7 people outside. The Radisson brunch is a much, much better option.
... – I was there like 3 years ago, it was my friend's birthday party. The steak I ordered was dry and tasteless and SMALL. My friend also ordered something but I dont remember what exactly, and he didn't like it either. I'm glad we didn't have to pay for the food because the birthday boy paid for everybody.
Uhhh ... gross – I walked in the restaurant, looked around, and shuddered. While decent looking from the outside, the interior is definitely in need of a complete overhaul. It smelled like and old ashtray inside, which did little to improve my opinion of the place. Admittedly, the offending smell may have been emitting from the bar flies, but it was definitely a strong odor. I walked out shortly after.
Perhaps if you go there at night in the dark it won't look all that bad and maybe they spray some air freshener before the dinner's start. Otherwise, I have no idea how anyone could expect to enjoy their meal in that slum.
You're joking – I'm sorry, I saw all of these great reviews and I'm just baffled. This was by far the worst meal I can recall in the Sacramento area. Sure, the view is great but the restaurant is tired and quite shabby. The food was an embarrassment - really not even worth mentioning. I suppose if you equate quantity with quality you'd find this a winner.
A Local Treasure – My husband and I love The Cliff House. It always satisfies! The staff is exceedingly pleasant. The food is outstanding (the best appetizer is the clams and mussels-yum!). The river view is beautiful and the ambience is very nice. This is also a great place to hold a private party.
I really recommend sitting near the fireplace inside- it makes for a memorable experience. It is getting a little tired looking and that's a shame because it is a really fine restaurant. I hope they will do a little updating soon.
Fairly Good Food- Attentive Service – Went to the Cliffhouse on a Saturday at 6:30pm. The place was 1/2 empty. A nice location but the building is rather dated and in need of a coat of paint inside & out. I had scallops wrappped in prosciutto; the prosciutto had been sliced to thickly which made eating the combination tohether rather difficult. It did have a tasty sauce and fried risotto. My wife has sea bass and said it was excellent. I'd say we would go back, but not rush back.
