Editorial Review for The Buckhorn Steak & Roadhouse – by Daniel Barnes

The Scene
One couldn't begin to talk about the Buckhorn without mentioning the animal heads. They form a glassy-eyed ring around the tables. But the Buckhorn isn't just a giant trophy case. Located at the foot of the de Vilbiss Hotel in historic downtown Winters, it's homey, loud and considered a meat lover's paradise.

The Food
When a renowned steakhouse like the Buckhorn, which serves only Certified Angus Beef, is first encountered, there's a tendency to stampede straight for the prime rib. If you can rein yourself in, we recommend starting with the fire-roasted artichoke, served herb roasted with tarragon aioli. Meanwhile, the sirloin steak rimmed with apple wood smoked bacon is a succulent house specialty that cuts like butter. There's also lamb, pork ribs and an entire seafood section to negotiate. Then again, the prime rib is no shrinking violet.

Insider Tips

Old Timer Tavern

Buckhorn's full-bar saloon is done up in turn-of-the-century fashion with old photos, memorabilia and a player piano.

Is that a Crumb?

Artist Robert Crumb used to hang out across the street from the Buckhorn at the Putah Creek Caf¿. His sketch of the de Vilbiss is proudly displayed by the Buckhorn's owners.

This is seriously the best steakhouse I have ever been to, they have better steaks than you could get in San Francisco or NYC and is definitely worth the trip from anywhere. The ambience is great, the service is the best that I have had eating anywhere (college student and we usually get crap) and i definitely awarded them for it. Bottom line, not only is this the best steakhouse around it is also the best deal around.

Pros: Amazing Steaks, Great Service, Good Prices

Cons: Not closer to me, Not closer to me, Not closer to me
