Editorial Review for Moxie – by Kira O'Donnell

The Scene
If it's possible to twist, heighten or sculpt an ingredient into an unnatural pose, Moxie will do it. But these flirtatious and showy plates aren't just eyecandy with no flavor substance to back them up. Frequented by upper-class Midtowners; expect to spend $100 for two including wine. This isn't a casual drop-in eatery. Also, service at Moxie can be erratic at times, and the regulars seem to be tended to more solicitously than the new faces.

The Food
Exotic specials and an eclectic array of infusions such as the boldly flavored Thai chicken pasta, redolent of curry and lemon grass, with tender strips of chicken; and the crab pot stickers with a sweet spicy sauce, sprinkled with sesame seeds.

What to Order
Rock shrimp quesadillas; the colorful and cheery cheesecake.

What to Skip
The meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

I have ben to Moxie 4 times, and they have been among the top dining experiences of my life. My husband still favors Biba, but I think Moxie has great food, great character and atmosphere. We usually eat on the early side (5:30-6:30), so have never had a too-busy, overcrowded experience. One time they let us come in and have a glass of wine at 5pm because we had a show to go to, and they didn't open until 5:30. It was a wonderful touch. The photos on the walls add to the experience for anyone into photography.

Pros: People, atmosphere, easy parking

I brought my wife here after looking online for something different than the typical place. The Moxie was a pleasant find that hides in a different but safe part of town and is behind a little red door (I think it was red). I like most first timers was thrown by the Menu because this place is not about the Menu... it is about the specials. They are fun to hear because everything is a special, from the apetizers to the main dish to the deserts... It was just great. The service was fantastic and I felt like I was part of the neighborhood being taken in and treated special by my uncle Lou from New York who owns a restraunt. -- In reality I have no uncle Lou from NY-- but for a moment it felt like I did. We went early on Wednesday evening and did not have reservations so I do think it is possible to get in if you go early. It filled up before we left. Definately give this place a shot. I did read the bad reviews and I think that they just caught the place on bad day. Too bad.
