Editorial Review for Marilyn's on K – by Tara de Lis

In Short
This laid-back locals-only spot is frequented by daytime sports fans and nighttime live blues aficionados. A tiny stage is surrounded by folding chairs and oftentimes standing-room-only crowds, which can reach three-people thick against the long bar in the back. It's not uncommon for people to stake out territory for dancing in spite of the real-estate crunch. A PG-rated wall of shame hangs near the restrooms, and features regulars in spirited poses.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

A single pool table hosts friendly competition during off-peak hours, but it's covered during live music sets.

The Extras

Coat hangers are available in back near the restrooms. The bar is, of course, not responsible for lost or stolen property.

I got kicked out of their because my friend Sandpaper Pete did a back to the future knee slide across the dance floor as soon as we walked in. They took our 7 dollars each and kicked us out in 30 seconds and wouldnt give us our money back. Hes on suckramento if you want to tell him hes cool!

Pros: bad

Cons: good

I read the citysearch description before heading out to Marilyn's to see a friend who was performing there. I was not impressed-the description says that there are folding chairs surrounding the stage, and I took that to mean Dress Casual! There are no folding chairs in sight at this bar! The stage is surrounded by nice tall black tables and bar stools, and the people there were all dressed nicely-no jeans and t-shirts. This may be different on different nights, but I was very impressed with the quality and the atmosphere. The drinks were great and we had a wonderful time relaxing to good music. There was also a small dance floor where a few people started dancing. A few more drinks and I would have been too...

Pros: lovely atmosphere- chic outdoor lounge area for smokers or people who want to cool off

Cons: parking is typical for downtown- expect to walk a little bit. Get there early- the place is small but in a comfortable way not a crushed-for-breath way
