Editorial Review for Harlow's – by Sarah Van Den Bosch

The Scene
Named after movie siren Jean Harlow, the black- and chrome-filled bar and restaurant evokes the class of old Hollywood with a cigar bar and strong martinis. Neon lights and a young professional crowd provide a modern touch. From couples to girls on a night out--dancing, drinking and chilling can all be accomplished. Weekends provide a riot-worthy crowd, while weeknights are great for romantic night with your special someone.

The Draw
Get a drink at the bar, dance your tail off on the dance floor and then settle down with some jazz upstairs in the MoMo lounge. People easily flow from one area to another without overwhelming each other. From hip-hop to salsa, no one music style dominates. Bands and DJs are regularly scheduled, while a band plays downstairs, a DJ may be upstairs spinning. It's the music that pulls the in-crowd through the front door.

My boyfriend and I got there early, right after dinner. It was probably 10pm. At first NO one was there, which was fabulous because it gave us time to find the best seat ever, a big leather chair that fit both of us. We sat there all night, mind you we smoked in shifts to keep it, because it did get crowded. I had 2 drinks at dinner, then a long island, an a Sambuca there. The long island was STRONG!!!! But maybe that's because I know how to act and most especially HOW TO TALK TO BARTENDERS! The cover was only $12 a person, my boyfriend's Martini and my Long Island came up to just $16, which is nothing, for two alcohol loaded drinks for under $20, you'd have to be so cheap and tight you squeak when you walk to not appreciate that. The music was ok, good 80s music at first, then some not so good hip hop something that just sounded awful, but we weren't there to listen to the band, we were there to drink, hang out, and laugh at all the white people that simply can't dance although they think they do it well. A drunk girl fell in my lap, it was hilarious! The bouncers were so awesome and helpful. Everyone says this place is so awful, I just think pretentious people shouldn't come out. PERIOD! Oh one bad thing, there were a few pregnant chicks, tons of ugly ones, and tons of ugly guys. On the upside, I wasn't there to scam anyway. It's a fun place, I'll be going back.

Pros: Awesome bouncers, good bartenders, water bar on the side

Cons: ugly pregnant chicks

I've dealt with it before but now I had to finally write about it. If Harlow's want to continue to be one of the upscale joints in Sacramento they need to start getting a clue on what they advertise and how to take care of their patrons. Harlow's is notorious for falsly advertising the start time of shows. On going to the latest show on Friday February 15, a local band Sol Peligro was advertised with a start time of 9:00 pm. They were the opening act to be followed by Grupo Fantasma with a scheduled start time of 10:00. OK not a problem, get their at 8:30 to get a good seat and buy a couple of watered down Long Islands for 15 bucks plus $3 tip not to mention the $30 cover. $48 dollars out of pocket starts the evening. 9 o'clock rolls around, no Sol Peligro, 9:15 nothing, 9:30, nothing 10 pm NOTHING, finally about 10:15 they take the stage and do a 45 minute set. Now it's eleven and Sol Peligro has to break down their equipment to let the healiners Grupo Fantasma set up. I admit they set up in a fairly quick half hour and finally take the stage at 11:30. A whole hour and a half after the advertised start time. Now If you are one of the sheep that go to Harlow's just to be seen then you probably will put up with however they run the establishment. BUT if you are there to catch a show then you expect to get what you pay for and start times matter! Then our group witness one of the wait-staff almost physically pull people off of chairs that were brought in from the patio area because "THOSE ARE PATIO CHAIRS NOT CLUB CHAIRS". There is just not enough table space since they try to pack the place to standing room only. These patrons were thoroughly embarresed and did not have to be treated that way. NOT good business sense! Harlow's has definately lost some patrons that will definately take their business elsewhere. Remember the patrons that you are mistreating are the ones that are keeping you in business, until they get a clue!
