Nice atmosphere, so-so food.
My wife had been wanting to try Cafe Bernardo for quite some time, and we finally went last night to give it a shot. The atmosphere inside the dining area and on the patio was really pretty cool, very fun. Unfortunately, when we got our food (cheeseburger and a Cesar salad), we were greatly disappointed. The burger was fair, although the bun was small and obviously store bought with no taste- just spongy. The meat was good, had a nice spice taste to it, which ultimately saved th burger from total failure. The Cesar salad, on the other hand, was not good. Store bought croutons with so-so lettuce drenched in a generic Cesar salad dressing, which when combined together, tasted a bit like fish. To top it off, my biggest pet peave was nailed right on the head as we were not given one refill on our sodas, and as a matter of a fact, we were never attended to after we were initially given our food. Really we were disappointed in having paid 24 bucks for an okay meal, with no refills given. A stomach ache at the end of the night confirmed our suspicion that we will not be returning to Cafe Bernardo.

Always a good meal.
I have been there at least 3 times and have always been happy with both the food and service. This is most certainly one of the best spots in downtown to eat.

Each Bernardo is Unique.
As a previous reviewer stated, the Barnardo in Midtown is counter-service and the one in Roseville is table-service. I am unsure of the set up for the Bernardo in Davis as I have never been. Go to Roseville if you want to be waited on, go to Midtown if you want to people watch, have the urban atmosphere and get in and out quicker.
I love all of the food at Bernardo. Breakfasts - the Bernardo Burrito is wonderful, especially if you like verde salsa and don't miss the "Bowl O'Mocha" as my friends and I call it. Their mochas are made with chocolate ganache and are served in small bowls. They are delish!
Lunch and dinners are wonderful and good quality for the price. I especially love the salmon, which comes with some yummy mashed potatoes and incredible garlicy bok choi!

Line up at the counter with Midtown masses for cheap haute California cuisine and creative breakfasts..
The Scene
Bernardo can be busy during peak chow times, when crowds gather to devour dishes selected from the chalk-written menu. After ordering at the counter and getting a number, patrons seat themselves at tables. Huge French posters and striped bistro chairs provide an air of Parisian charm.
The Food
It's popularity hangs on this crowd-pleasing premise: reasonably priced food that's utterly delicious, like the grilled salmon served on a bed of spinach polenta. It's tender and succulent, with quality that usually goes for a king's ransom. Salads, soups, sandwiches, "pizzettas" and full plates all tantalize. Don't miss the rosemary-chicken pizza--pungent with goat cheese and rich caramelized onions--and the baby spinach salad--farmers' market fresh with pears, honey walnuts and crumbled blue cheese.

MARYAP.
I have eaten at the Cafe Bernardo's in Roseville, and my favorite food is the skirt steak that they serve. When I visited the downtown Cafe Bernardo's it was so different. They did not have the food that I like at the other store. The service was real poor. No one came to help us or ask us if we needed anything not even a refill on the soda..If I wanted a do it yourself resturart I would have stayed at home and eaten. I will never eat at that place again.

Quality Food at Low Prices.
Bernardo's may be a few bucks more expensive than a super-sized combo meal at CJ's or McD's, but the comparative quality of the food more than makes up for the price difference. If it weren't for Bernardo's, I'd never have a healthy meal. One can get a fresh salad, a side of grilled salmon, and a good glass of house chardonnay all for about 10 bucks. The menu also has other great salads, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas, and breakfast is great too (including their housemade granola). Getting the same quality food anywhere else in town would cost you twice as much. Plus, the ambiance is ecclectic for Sac -- there is always a mix of people of all ages and social backgrounds. I'm hard pressed to find a better all-around place to dine and drink in Sac.

Gotta love it.
We've been there several times, sometimes with friends and no one has ever been let down. The breads, soups, salads, everything was awesome except the pizzas, they were just good.

FUN place for Breakfast.
Have gone there a few times for breakfast only. We liked it, and out of town guests find it to be a fun atmosphere. Food is great.

you never leave hungry.
C.B. named after Paragary's dog Bernardo (hehe) has the best blueberry pancakes and serves a mean chicken apple sausage omelette!!!
Dont forget to try the belgian waffle with pecan butter...their lunch menu has a variety of asian/american influences but they make a mean blue cheese and almond salad.
The best time to go is before 10:30 am or you'll be waiting in line for a good 20 minutes.
