RiverLunchBreak. I don't get the high reviews I've read so far. I walked into a plain restaurant, walked up to a counter with a clerk that had an unkept beard and baseball cap on. I ended up ordering a steak sandwich for $8.95. What I got was a brown bag with two pieces of round bread/buns with sliced steak in the middle. No salad, soup, french fries and no one waiting on tables. The meat was tender but very heavy with garlic. I expected a much larger menu, a steak sandwich with au jus and all the trimmings.
A funky Sacramento institution, serving awesome steak sandwiches and chopped steak burgers in the same location for 31 years..
The Scene
Nationwide meats began as a butcher shop and evolved over the years into a lunch hot spot. Big John stands behind the counter where his dad once stood, serving up brown bags of food and conversation. The walls are made of cheap (but apparently resilient) paneling, and the place has only a fraction of the seating it needs.
The Food
The menu is simple: meat sandwiches, burgers and fries. There's also a long list of milkshakes for dessert, including peanut butter. The steak sandwich, served on a garlic-toasted roll, is one of the best anywhere. Ask for grilled onions, mushrooms and cheese to complete the experience. The fries are huge quartered potato affairs, and aren't always cooked through. The onion rings aren't much better than the grocery store variety, so save your appetite for steaks and shakes.
Best sirloin burgers!. This is the place to go for a real hamburger. The ambience is lacking (it is basically a butcher shop with some tables added), but the sirloin burgers can't be beat. The fries are good also and consist of a whole potato cut into about six mammoth chunks.
Nationwide meats. These are the best tasting burgers in Sacramento. Fresh meats.
The real king of the burger. It's the best and the most original, bar none! You CAN have it your way and this is a locally owned and operated place.
The best by far!. They have the greatest hamburgers in Sacramento. Bring your appetite for the Frenchburgers. They have a size for everyone. And the fries are big and wonderful. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
Best dead cow in the world. 1/3Lb ground sirloin burgers, up to 4 patties on 1 burger, if you can handel it. Along with some of the best ice cream shakes in town. Bar none, the best burgers I've ever had in my life.
