Great tacos. I come here for the deep-fried tacos that I can't get outside of California. These are the gourmet tacos handed down by the original inhabitants of California, rather than the recent Mexican immigrants and their minimalist "authentic" tacos or the hard-shelled Taco Bell-inspired ones that have taken over in the rest of the US. Check it out!
Horrible food. Yuck I hated this place. The enchilada sauce is disgusting and reminded me of cafeteria lunches. The salsa is not hot and none of the food seemed appealing. I wouldn't go back.
Best Mexican food in town!. I've been dining here for 35 years and the food is always consistant and excellent. Ample portions with great service. The top shelf margaritas are the best in town.
Real Mexican Food in California. This is the closest to real Mexican food I have found in 2 years. I am from San Antonio and although this doesn't quite match the mexican food I'm used to it does come really close. Highly reccomended.
Perfect!!!. This is one of the absolute best Mexican restaurants in Sacramento! The food is excellent, the services is always incredible, and they have very generous portions, so you end up with yummy leftovers! Oh, and they have mild, medium, and HOT salsas!!!! I love it!
The best. could be! have been several times each time the food was outstanding. A vibrant Mexican atmosphere with average service. I've learned you don't go to Mexican restaurants for great service-you go for the chimichangas, enchiladas, chile verde, etc. have patience and enjoy. I guarantee you will not be leave hungry or disappointed.
Run as fast as your little legs will carry you to this authentic Mexican, three-item combo plate nirvana in South Sacramento..
The Scene
The setting whisks you back in time to Mexico--there's a hallway decorated with ceramic bulls' heads, a wide-open plaza-style dining room with a fountain and a romantic sweeping staircase. There's even a stagecoach on the restaurant's upper level.
The Food
This is not the place to go for heart-healthy, yuppified Tex-Mex food. People come to El Novillero to pork out on "old-fashioned" enchiladas, tacos, tamales, chile rellenos, appetizer combination plates (with nachos, quesadillas and guacamole) and superb beans and rice.
What to Order
The house specialty is carnitas, and they are the best anywhere--amazingly tender, with crispy edges and a light but flavorful seasoning.
