Average mexican cuisine suited more towards an American food palate. My husband is accustomed to his mom's authentic Mexican food, which is in a word, delicious. Her upbringing as the eldest amongst 8 siblings in Mexico means that she can magically transform leftovers and can make homemade tortillas, tamales, rellenos and salsas that are to die for. He is very picky, when it comes to mexican cuisine for that reason. We have been in search of the best Mexican food restaurant in the Sacramento area, since we moved here some years ago, something that could rival his hole-in-the-wall favorite in the Bay area, Los Pericos in Dublin, CA. We have tried various restaurants and taquerias in the time since our move, including El Novillero (South Sac), Casa Gomez (Elk Grove), La Fuente (Elk Grove), Mision Rogelio (Gold River), Gordito Burrito (Natomas), La Mision (South Sac), La Favorita Taqueria (Franklin Blvd in Sac), Tres Hermanas (Midtown Sac), La Campana Taqueria (Elk Grove), Jimboy's Tacos (Florin Rd in Sac), and Viento's Mexican Grill (Pocket Rd in Sac). While the service was friendly and the restaurant was clean and well-maintained, Caballo Blanco, unfortunately did not get great scores for its food. I would classify it as average in its peer group. The chile rellenos were spongy with salsa that was spicy, yet lacked flavor. The spanish rice was dry. The beef burrito while being large, had only sparing amounts of meat. The lemon chicken was good, but too heavy on the cracked pepper...a bit too reminiscent of the On The Border tex-mex restaurant chain. This restaurant was certainly a far cry better than Vientos (blech), Mision Rogelio (blech) or Jimboy's (triple blech), but not as good as Tres Hermanas or La Campana. I think the food is more suited for those looking for something a little less traditional and a little more American than Mexican. If we were in the area again, we'd probably just go across the street to La Favorita Taqueria #2 instead.
Caballos = Good. Doesn't get any better than this. Quality Mexican food at great prices. It's this and Sal's in West Sacramento.
This little gem of a restaurant has been serving authentic Mexican food in south Sacramento for nearly 40 years..
The Scene
Hidden under a large green awning on Franklin Boulevard is Caballo Blanco. Entering through the front doors, is like stepping into a small village courtyard. Cozy booths sit under Spanish-style overhangs and the walls are covered with oversized black and white photographs, many of caballos blancos (white horses). The service is efficient and the prices are very reasonable.
The Food
The large menu is divided into many sections, which makes ordering easy but deciding difficult. Choose from one of many traditional Mexican dishes or more than 20 combination plates.
What to Order
The Ay Chihuahua chilaquilas made with tortilla chips sauteed in a special sauce, shredded chicken and topped with melted cheeses and avocado slices. For something light, order from the "Health-Mex" portion of the menu, which offers quesadillas, tostadas and Mexican sandwiches, or tortas. Sample the chicken breast marinated with lemon, herbs and spices, served with a side of rice and beans.
