Where the California Dream really started..
The Scene
James Marshall's discovery of yellow metal in a sawmill kicked off California's gold rush. It began on this site, along the banks of the American River in Coloma. Today, people from all over the country come to check out the forty-niners' story.
The Hike
Before stopping at the Gold Discovery Museum, enjoy a picnic under the trees or even try your own hand at panning for gold in the river. You can also take a self-guided tour through historic Coloma. Check out the monument loop hike and the Monroe loop hike for a bit of educational exercise. And don't miss the cemetery, or wine tasting at the local winery.
