Worst Restaurant with contaminated food. This is the worst Indian restaurant I ever had in US. The food quality was terribly bad and it was giving foul smell. It was such a horrible experience for me and I couldn't resist myself from writing this review. I am the honest reviewer writing this to alert other visitors. I do not want someone to get fooled like me. I think food control agency should take serious action against this restaurant owner about the contaminated food and they should close the restaurant. I couldn't eat even a single spoon of food because of the deteriorated smell of the food. I am pretty sure they are serving one week old food. BE CAREFUL ....

Great Indian Food and a Family Atmosphere. I have been going to Star of India for years and I love this place. We have actually been here since the kids were little and played with our kids on the back stage area. It is a family friendly atmosphere and the food is the best I have found in the area. I moved to Davis and I drive to Fair Oaks when I want great Indian food.

My Daughter's favourite place to Eat.. I took my daughter to Star of India for her 16th Birthday. She had never had Indian food before. The waitress helped us choose the popular selections from the menu and these were fantastic. We had Aloo Matar - (Potatoes with Peas aromatic marriage of indian spices), Lamb with Mushrooms in a creamy coconut sauce, Chicken Sultani (Pan roasted chicken with onions, tomatoes and spiced with ginger flavor).

Garlic Naan bread fresh out of the oven to top it all off. The restaurant served a complimentary dessert for my daugher's birthday. It was called Ras Malai (Fresh cottage cheese ball in sweetened milk served cold with pistachios). Hmmm.... Delicious stuff. Star of India is a family run business. It was a welcome site to see the whole family (three generations) working at the same time. The grandfather cooked in the Kitchen, Mom and Dad worked in the front and served tables, and teenagers helped clear tables and helped their parents do the setting for new customers.

Worst Indian-Pakistani restaurant ever!. This has to be the worst Indian-Pakistani restaurant I have been to, and I have been to atleast a hundred. I went there with my wife for dinner, and on the window they had the menu displayed. The prices seemed to be high, but we thought of giving it a try despite all the negative feedbacks we received from friends in the area. The restaurant seemed to be run by a family (the owner's daughter who seemed around 12-14 yrs of age, was running errands on the tables). Other than us there was just one more couple in the restaurant. When we got the menu card, we noticed that all the prices were higher than the ones displayed in the window. Upon commenting, the owner responded half-heartedly that it was only a dollar or so more for all the items.

I ordered chicken biryani and my wife ordered "Maharaja Thali" which is the non-veg sampler plate kind of thing. The dishes came to the table in less than 5 minutes, giving us a feeling that they were not prepared fresh. Our fears were confirmed once we took our first bites. Dal and mutton curry seemed to be from frozen packs that you get at Indian grocery stores, tandoori chicken was definitely 2 days old (and simply re-heated) and biryani was nothing but plain rice tossed with chicken pieces in oil. The plates that the food was served in were cheap steel plates, and seemed very unhygienic.

Our appetite ruined, I decided to let the owner know of our disappointments (something I have never done in a restaurant till now), but couldn't do so, because the young girl turned up to give us our bill and collect the payment.

I at-once understood why the prices are that high at the place. It is because all their customers have to be one-time customers, and they milk them for as much as they can the first time itself, because there won't ever be a second time. I think only those that have never eaten Indian food can like it over there.

Avoid like plague!

Star of India is the best restaurant in town. I went to Star of India with my family out of town and it was the best ever.. I went to Star of India with my mother who was visiting me from out of town. We were seated quickly and the waiter was friendly. We ordered Chicken Tikka Kabobs - Cubes of boneless chicken breast served on a bed of onions and bell peppers on a sizzling platter. My mom ordered Rogan Josh - tender lamb cooked in a delious gravy. The place was full and the owners seemed to know a lot of customers by name who obviously were regulars at Star of India. Eventhough the place was packed, we got our food promptly. Besides serving the dine-in customers, Star of India does carryout food. Just give them a call and your food will be ready in 30 minutes. Enjoy the gourmet cooking of India in your own home.

Best Treat in Town at Star Of India in Fair Oaks.. We had a great time eating there. They had the best Lamb Vindaloo in town that I have had in a long time. Their meat samosas were to die for. To top it off we had the nine kinds of different vegetable in a coconut korma sauce. Yum!!! The service was friendly and very helpful in choosing the dishes. They had a wide selection of Indian beers to cool off the burning in your mouth. You got to try this place....
