38.560846 -121.490087A culinary Nepalese adventure!. I don't understand the negative reviews of this place. Maybe it's because we come here frequently (we live within walking distance) but the service for us has always been prompt and friendly. The Chicken Vindaloo is excellent and as spicey-hot (or not ) as you want. Tandoori chicken recommended, too. Order the complete meal with all the sample dishes, some of which may be spicier than one is used to, but c'mon (easy for me to say: the hotter the better!) The garlic naan is great, too.
YUCK! Plastic in my momo!.
We decided to give Kathmandu another shot tonight, despite being disappointed before. Terrible idea.
First, our waitress was not friendly at all. But whatever. Maybe the food would make up for it?
So I ordered the Vegan Thali & my husband ordered Tandoori Chicken. To be fair, my husband liked his chicken. But I thought that the food was not flavorful or rich at all, unless the only flavor you are concerned with is salt. Kathmandu lacks the depth & subtlety found in other, better, Indian restaurants. Really: just LOTS OF SALT & uninteresting dishes. Since I have returned home I have had about 6 glasses of water, just trying to get rid of the AWFUL TASTE IN MY MOUTH.
And that's not even the reason why I gave them 0 stars. Here's the thing. I bit into one of my vegetarian momos and felt a strange texture in my mouth. I PULLED OUT A 1.5 INCH LONG SHARP PIECE OF YELLOW PLASTIC!!! It looked like maybe the prong of a really long fork or knife broke off & someow ended up completely enfolded in a momo! I mean, it was LONG & BIG & SHARP - it is hard for me to believe that someone overlooked that thing going into a dumpling!!! I can't even imagine what would have happened if I had swallowed it!
So I brought the piece of plastic & the rest of the momo up to the manager. She just took it out of my hand & said: "Where are you sitting?" I told her & then she sauntered away. The rest of the meal everyone in the restaurant avoided us. Our waitress stayed away for almost an hour, a cook came out to eye us suspiciously, & the manager never returned to tell us what was going on or apologize or anything! NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY! We were completely ignored! It wasn't until much later that our waitress came back & muttered "we took the thali off the bill" & walked off.
Unles you like eating shards while people are rude to you (hey, if that's your thing...), AVOID KATHMANDU!
