We had been to this place before because they sold a unique cake flavor that one of our employees really enjoyed. This year I ordered the cake a week prior to the day we would need to pick it up. I even spoke to the owner & he took my order. The day of the persons birthday we drove a half hour to this place & when we got there they told us they didn't have it. Supposedly they had no order or record of it & out of every cake they had they didnt have the one we needed. It was the DAY of the employee's birthday! They did not apologize, try to fix the issue, offer anything, etc. I would never be able to trust Ricks again with something important such as a wedding cake or even a birthday cake when they cant even remember to make it. I couldn't imagine if something like this happened to a couple on their wedding day. Maybe I should have waited until the last minute to order it so they wouldn't be incompetent & lose the order. We were very dissapointed with their customer service and how they reacted to the mistake. They did not try to resolve the situation and didn't even apologize.
Pros: Unique types of cake
Cons: Bad customer service

Great place for a date, there are tons of choices, but be prepared for the huge crowd on Friday and Saturday nights. I like the variety of choices but none of the desserts are what I would call spectacular

I have been going to Rick's for many years, and was surprised when I saw the earlier negative reviews until I looked at the dates they were posted. Yes, they had a rough year awhile ago, but they definitely came back in full force. It is crowded on weekend nights, but I've never known anyone to regret the wait. There is a huge selection, and I would strongly disagree with the previous reviews about portion size and inconsistency. For me, the servings have always been more than enough to satisfy my appetite and still have leftovers to take home. The servers are friendly and the deserts are amazing. Rick's is a unique Sacramentan institution. I fully recommend it for a date night, a special treat for family members young and old, and I've even been known to go by myself once in awhile when I've needed a small indulgence. I've ordered several birthday cakes there as well, and they have always awed my guests.
Pros: Taste, portions, uniqueness
Cons: Hard to choose just one desert to try

The desserts here are incredible. The serving sizes can be inconsistent, but even the "small" slices are plenty, considering how many layers most cakes have and how rich they are. The one problem at Rick's is that leftovers are covered and kept until they run out. So if you're ordering an unpopular cake, chances are it's been sitting there a day or two and won't be as delicious as if it were fresh. I disagree with complaints about the price -- it's only a dollar more than you'd pay at Denny's and the quality is no comparison! The cakes are expensive compared to Safeway but about standard for a specialty bakery. Keep in mind there is often a line at peak hours. On the bright side you can use the time you spend waiting to decide what to order!
Pros: delicious!, many varieties, reasonable price
Cons: long lines

The food was good, but as someone had said previously, the serving size is very slim, It depends on the mood of the waitress. The ambience isnt that great. Everytime I go there is a homeless man who sits in one of the seats and stinks and they let him stay for some reason. The food is awesome, BUT considering the price, 32 dollars for a cheesecake is too obscene for me.
Pros: Good Dessert
Cons: EXPENSIVE!!!, Poor Serving Size, Poor Service

Every time I went to Sacramento over the past few years, I had to have a slice of scrumptious Kahlua Bomb or other chocolate based cake. The past two times both my dessert & my husband's were terrible. Has the diner changed owners or chefs? The desserts were either super salty or super bland. What happened??
Pros: atmoshere
Cons: gone downhill

After reading the tempting reviews, I was excited to visit. We were disapointed first by the staff that couldn't tell us if a certain dessert was a cheesecake or mousse or what it was called and then further by the 2 cakes we chose, both were dry.

Each time I go to Rick's it is a gamble. Good desserts which are consistently good but portions are all over the place. Used to be huge, and now range from slivers to good. And when paying $5 for a slice of cake I expect it to be huge. My favorites are the german chocolate cake, the champagne cake, and the carrot cake. Definitely a good late night spot to hit for dessert. Good people watching.

The desserts are AWESOME! The Oreo cheesecake and the champange cake were soooooo goood. The atmosphere reminds me of a 50's diner and the service was great. I can't wait to go back!

Stepping into Rick's Dessert Diner takes you back to the 50s with its black and white checkered floor, juke boxes and red bar stools. The desserts being offered for the day are displayed along with the prices in glass cases. I must say that they are a little on the pricey side; however, the toasted coconut pecan cake I had was quite good. Service could be improved but overall not too bad. It's a nice place to go to for a late night dessert.
Pros: Open Late
Cons: Pricey, Poor Service
