Great service and selections

by JohnnieAppleSeed

One of the last places to get vinyls here in midtown. Knowledgable and helpful staff. They can hold items for you. Found some great, rare, unusual movies there. Great prices.

  • Pros: The staff and selection

The Beat keeps Knockin'

by sselfless

The Beat boasts an immense inventory of both popular and marginal music. Strengths: Vast selection, An amazing stockpile of used CDs, the massive vinyl section. Weaknesses: Recent releases are too expensive, no restrooms, limited parking (no biggie).

All in all, one of Sac's best music sources. [sselfless]

  • Pros: Location, Selection, Used CD Section
  • Cons: Prices, No restrooms, Parking

The Beat - Midtown Sacramento

by trippinasianman

The beat offers an alternative to the mundane environment of chain record stores. The selection rivals Tower/Virgin and even features local artists. The prices for used/new cds are reasonable and the staff is very knowledgable. Most important - it's cool.

  • Pros: Selection, Used CDS, Convenience

A vinyl lover's wet dream; a collector's vision; a CD buyer's haven from chain store mediocrity.

The Scene
Before you walk inside, take a gander at the poster pillar out front and see what shows are coming locally, or maybe find some new bandmates. Inside, don't let the huge subway poster selection or the beckoning smells of the espresso bar keep you from perusing one of the biggest music selections around.

What You Will Find
The Beat stocks new and used CDs, tapes, and some very rare vinyl for the DJ or the nostalgia buff. If you want it, they've probably got it, even bands you've never heard about, like Sneaker Pimps or Sheep On Drugs. Buy a Beat coffee mug, fill it with brew, and hit the listening bar to check the groove before you make your move.

What You Will Not Find
No videos or DVDs. No snooty salespeople. No low prices (gotta give up something for this great selection, right?).

Beat Surrender

by Stewboss

The Beat! is a better record store than I would ever expect to find in Sacramento. They have a great selection of both new and used, vinyl and CD. If you're not immediately in the Sacramento area you can find them selling on some of the auction sites. But, like the last review, I highly recommend an in-person visit.
